Andaman Islands Holidays

11 Days / 10 Nights

Across the Bay of Bengal lies the 572 islands that form the Andaman Islands. Only 38 islands are inhabited, and much of the coastline is a declared marine reserve. With coral reefs and white beaches, this unpolluted paradise is treasure for divers and snorkelers with deep vertical wall dives, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, dugong, and very good underwater visibility. The weather between December and April is characteristically dry, with clear blue skies, and refreshing sea breezes. Direct 2-hour flights from both Kolkata and Chennai offer easy connectivity from the mainland.

In the evening attend a ‘son et lumiere’ show at the Historic Cellular Jail. Cellular Jail, has been a mute witness to the fate of hapless freedom fighters, who were incarcerated in this Jail. Now a National Memorial, the Jail, completed in the year 1906 acquired the name, ‘Cellular’ because it is entirely made up of individual cells for the solitary confinement of prisoners.

Day 04: Port Blair. Excursion to Ross Island and Viper Island.
Visiting Ross Island feels like discovering a jungle-clad Lost City, à la Angkor Wat, where the ruins happen to be Victorian English rather than ancient Khmer. The former administrative headquarters for the British in the Andamans, Ross Island is an essential half-day trip from Port Blair. In its day, little Ross was fondly called the ‘Paris of the East’ (along with Pondicherry, Saigon etc…). But the cute title, vibrant social scene and tropical gardens were all wiped out by the double whammy of a 1941 earthquake and the invasion of the Japanese (who left behind some machine-gun nests that are great fun to poke around in).

Later visit the Viper Island, to see the sobering remains of the ochre-coloured brick jail and the gallows built by the British in 1867. The formidable name comes from a wrecked 19th-century British trading ship nearby. Return back to Port Blair for overnight.

Day 05: Port Blair to Havelock Island by motorboat.
Early morning depart by motor- boat to Havelock Island. Transfer to Barefoot Island Resort at Havelock. The small and intimate Barefoot Island Resort offers air-conditioned cottages and sits in the middle of the jungle along a two-mile stretch of secluded white sand, so beautiful that it was named the best beach in the world in 2005 by The Times. The resort offers a wide range of largely unexplored diving sites rich in underwater marine life. Enjoy your afternoon at Beach number 7 on the western coast, better known as “The Radha Nagar Beach”. It is one of the most pristine beaches you’ll find anywhere in Asia. Overnight stay at Hotel at Havelock Island.
